Firstly, thanks so much for for doing this gut job. I've been pondering the issue of compatibility with this device. I own one of the Energizer charging mats for 2 Wii remotes. What got me interested is that I'm in the market for a new mouse and I thought the Apple Magic Mouse would be a great buy. However I didn’t like the fact that it runs on 2AA batteries and I thought about hacking one of the Wiimote packs for the induction coil and circuits (about $12 on Amazon) and replacing the cells with AA NiMH since the Wii pack cells are AAA. I did some simple functionality tests with the charger and once in the right location, the charger will charge the battery even if it’s not aligned at the right angle. You can spin the thing around with the magnetic connection as the axis, and have no interruption in charging. However I discovered that when out of the Wiimote, the battery pack won’t charge, and the mat shows a flashing red light indicating an error. There must be something about the circuit being closed, or even something about the Wiimote specifically which gives the mat the all clear to start charging. I’d really love to know what secret proprietary stuff is going on in there and how to subvert it. I’d like to be able to charge NiMH cells on this baby, or better yet, just set the mouse or other device down on the mat next to a Wiimote and have it just work with the coil, battery and guts inside. C’mon Qi, If you want your wireless charging standard to take off, you gotta give the people a li’l som’n som’n like the ability to charge standard compatible cells inductively...please? Other induction pad chargers compatible with the iphone and several other devices have a seemingly foolproof interface kit. How can there not be a corollary with the Energizer Wiimote charger pad? I know it's made for the Wiimotes exclusively, but they advertise Qi standard compatibility on the Energizer site for this thing! Please keep this going and let me know if I can be of any further help.

I saw this mentioned LifeHacker, and upon realizing I had the parts to do it I had to try it! I've since stuffed the parts into an old Commodore 1541 floppy disk drive:

For all those that enjoy reverse engineering tear-downs, I've got a surprise this Monday. Stay tuned!

Wow, nice going, Alec! You're making quite the run around the blogs these past couple days. I'm definitely going to have to take advantage of this idea since my PC is behind the couch I game on and I've been too lazy to buy an external drive to sit next to me.

Also, nice censoring of the BF2 CD, there.
